Description

Acer campestre

The UK’s only native maple growing to 8-20m, it is found in woods, scrub and hedgerows, and on chalk lowland. It is widely planted in gardens and parks due to its compact habit and rich autumn colours.  The Field maple is tolerant of pollution.

An inconspicuous tree for much of the year, the Field maple comes to life in autumn when its lobed leaves turn golden-yellow and its winged fruits disperse in the wind.

The field maple is a sturdy broadleaf which supports caterpillars, aphids, and all their predator.

Traditionally, the wood of Field maple was used for wood-turning, as a veneer and to make musical instruments, such as harps.

In parts of Europe, it was thought that maple branches hung around a doorway stopped bats entering. The herbalist Culpepper recommended maple leaves and bark to strengthen the liver.
