Flowers are a distinctive pink-red in colour. An important plant for pollinating insects, including bees, butterflies and hoverflies. It likes woodlands and grows in sun to partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. It has male and female flowers on separate plants and forms clumps of downy leaves from which emerge flowering stems up to 1m in height.  Flowers have five deeply notched, pink petals. Seed capsules have toothed edges as they open to disperse ripe seed on female plants
